He served over four years of active duty in the Army Air Corps during WW 2 and he received numerous citations for aerial combat duty in Europe. At war's end, he finished his education and earned a BS. In addition, he completed 10 hours of study toward his MS. He then taught Industrial Arts at Milan High School. He helped form the Whittaker Volunteer Fire Department, he served as Augusta Township Building Inspector, and was a licensed amateur radio operator. He ran a horticulture business in later years.

He was a graduate of Union School of Refrigeration in Detroit, Michigan and also Austin Tech. He farmed in Michigan and Minnesota for 34 years, moving to Blooming Prairie in 1979 and retiring in 1983. In 1964, he won "Farmer of the Year" award from Michigan State U. He retired in 1983.
