Note: John L. Hardenberg was a captain in the 4th Ulster Militia commanded by Col. Johannes Hardenburg. He was also an officer during General Sullivan's expedition into the heart of the Iroquois Empire in 1779. He was a member of Clinton's Fourth New York Brigade during the campaign. In carrying out their mission, members of Sullivan's Army were impressed by the profusion of rich vegetables, fruits, animal fodder and the beauty of the land of the Finger Lakes region. Hardenberg's admiration for this "well chosen" land did not diminish when he returned to that portion of it lying in the Finger Lakes district to survey military bounty land there. Four years later, in 1793, he settled on a portion of the land he had surveyed, now within the limits of Auburn, New York. Six of these military bounty lots comprise the site of Auburn, originally called Hardenberg's Corners. He traveled home after the Sullivan Expedition with Capt. Philip DuBois Bevier of the 5th New York Regiment. Lt. Hardenberg wrote a journal containing his experiences of this campaign.
The family name is spelled Hardenburgh in several old records.
