Note: Johannes (John] DeWitt Bevier was the first representative of the Bevier family in Richland County, Ohio. He moved to Cayuga County, New York in 1800, and in 1813 he volunteered as a private under General McClure in John Bassett and A. Mattison's Company and served until the spring of 1814, at which time he was discharged. He received a pension for his wartime services.
In August of 1814 he started on foot for Ohio. He went first to Columbus and remained a year. He then removed to Chillicothe and thence to Plymouth Township where he settled on section 9. He was married three times, with Martha Louthan being his third wife. In 1870 they resided in Richland County, Cass Twp., Ohio.
In those early days there were more wolves than sheep and Mr. Bevier killed one of a novel kind. It was a large, black wolf, larger than any other wolf he had ever seen. When John had shot him, the wolf jumped up several feet, two or three times and then came after John with his mouth wide open and vengeance in his eyes. He came on but a few steps, however, when suddenly he fell down dead. Mr. Bevier took his scalp and gave it to a preacher by the name of Matthews, who collected the bounty of four dollars for it. [From a Pioneer History of Richland Cty., Ohio] He lived with his son Matthew in 1850 in Plymouth Township, Richland County, Ohio.

Note: During the census of 1850, his family resided in Auburn Township, Crawford County, Ohio next door to his brother Alexander's widow and her family. He owned real property valued at $1,200 and was listed as a farmer. Both family names were spelled Bevere and thus had eluded the family genealogists for several years. They were found by accident in October 2002.
