(Robert wrote this letter to his brother, Josiah C. Bevier, 1 Jan 1864).

Dear Brother,
I now sit me down to answer your most welcome letter that I received last night. Was very glad to hear from you and I hope you will be more prompt in the future. Well even the world moves along as usual, that is this part of it where I live. I am well and having as good a time as one could expect being under fear all of the time. You wanted to know what I thought about your enlisting. Well, even I don't know as you will hear from me as you have been a soldier once, but I don't want you to get mad if I tell you that you I don't know anything about soldiering - but you don't and if you will take my advice you will never enlist to go into the ranks. If you want to go into the army, go as a citizen teamster or something of that kind or you can enlist as one. If I was out of the army now and know as much as I do at the present time I think I would make money. Now hear me and never go into the ranks.
Well, even I would like to come home on a furlough this winter, but I don't know as I can make it out. If I had some reason such as sickness at home I don't know, but I could get home 20 days. Maybe you can make that right, but keep it still and I guess it might work. There is no hurt in trying it is there. What think you? Now write as soon as you get this you know what I mean. Well, even the news is pretty good from the South and Northwest. Today is New Years and it is passing of very quietly and I wish that I had some of the crumbs that was left of the oyster supper - did you go? Now write and give all of the news and oblige your BrotherRobert
