Note: Charles Bevier was born the son of a farmer, but always had a knack for mechanical pursuits. He was raised in upstate New York in Wayne County, near Wolcott and later in Owasco in Cayuga County. He became maintenance foreman of the Standard Optical Company, which later became Shuron Optical. While at Standard Optical he invented quite a few labor-saving and practical devices to aid in production. It is said that for all practical purposes he invented the v-belt which provides a belt with little or no slippage. He never applied for patents for his inventions, so the name Gates will always be linked with the invention of the v-belt, and not that of Charles Bevier. He was always a fine furniture and cabinet maker and many examples of his workmanship are still found in the homes of the descendants of his family. In the census of 1920, he and his family lived in Geneva, New York. He is listed as a pattern maker with a cutlery company. In the household were his daughter Charlotte Clark and her three young sons and Frank G. Bedell, Charles' brother in law. He retired early to a simple life in the country in the Village of Owasco and later in nearby Auburn, New York. While in Owasco, he made furniture, raised produce, and engaged in other pursuits of a mechanical nature to help support his family. He had the dignified, upright, tall look of a French gentleman and died suddenly of a heart attack in 1939. Florence Isadora Bedel worked hard sewing to help put her sister Nina through college. Her father, Ambrose Bedell, was wounded twice during the Civil War. He petitioned President Lincoln to continue fighting after being discharged for wounds. President Lincoln wrote a personal letter which granted the special request.
