Note: Lived in Brookfield, Missouri, was unmarried, and served as a Private in Co. A, 6th Missouri Infantry in the Spanish-American War. According to family legend, after returning from the war, "he acted strange and was never right. It seemed he got to where they couldn't manage him so they put him in the poor folks place in Linneus, where his Army service pension paid his way until he died." In 1900, he lived with Edgar Josiah and Warren Bevier in Linn County, Marceline Twp., Missouri and he was a broom maker. In 1910, he was a patient living in Ward 2, St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1920, he was listed as an inmate in Locust Tree Township, Linn County, Missouri.

His wife was living in the same town at a different address, so apparently they were separated.

During the census of 1920, he and his brother, James Russell, lived and worked on a farm owned by another person in Linn County, Baker Township, Missouri.

Note: Census of 1900 indicates initials of E. J. and living with brother Warren in 1900 in Marceline, Missouri. The census of 1910 finds the family in Idaho, Nez Perce County, Dent Precinct. On his son Warren's application for Social Security in 1936, his name was listed as Edgar Josiah Bevier. Other sources indicate he was named Josiah Edgar Bevier.

Note: She taught school in Portage County, Wisconsin until the advent of the Civil War at which time she enlisted as a nurse. Later, she became a widely read author, one of her books was titled: "The cave on the Yellowstone." During the census of 1870 she lived with G. Josiah Bevier and his family in Brookfield, Missouri. Her name was listed as Nellie in this census. Helen Wilmot Bevier evidently went westward with her son. She married Henry H. Sharman and lived during the census of 1880 in West Gallatin Valley, Gallatin County, Montana. Here date of death is taken from her obit in the Stevens Point Daily News in Wisconsin.
